Trip PlanExpand all

You'll wake early in Kathmandu, before 5.30am, have an early light breakfast, and take your luggage to the tour group vehicle, where your guide will be ready sorting out documentation before you finish your tea.

The road north on the Prithvi Highway passes through the Trishuli valley before a steep, persistent ascent past terraced rice fields and heavy subtropical forest. By mid-morning the landscape changes significantly: fewer trees, wider skies, and noticeably fresher air as you approach the Nepal border control at Rasuwagadhi. For many people the feeling at this point is one of a nervous, subdued excitement: the prospect of Tibet is no longer just theoretical.

Expect your passport to be checked along with your Tibet Travel Permit at the border; there's mandatory luggage inspection, and expect one to two hours for processing. Your guide will see you through most of the paperwork. Stay close to your group and don't take any pictures of the border facilities; listen carefully to your guide. When the entire group has passed Chinese immigration procedures at Gyirong Port, it's a forty-five-minute drive down through steep, river-carved gorges.

Kerung sits at a low altitude of just 1800 meters, an excellent first stop where the serious altitude has yet to begin.

Max Altitude: 2,850 m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Standard HotelDuration: 7 - 8 hrs driveDistance: Approx. 160 km

Upon waking in Kerung, you will experience some of your first effects of the altitude; a dull headache and/or slight difficulty in breathing are quite normal. Take a warm breakfast—tsampa, a kind of porridge, or steamed bread are readily available in guesthouses. Do not drink coffee on this first morning, as the high altitude is incredibly dehydrating.

Your vehicle will start a long, rapid climb out of the Kerung Valley at least 2500 m in about 2 hours via exposed switchbacks climbing up the walls of the valley. Herds of yak and nomadic dwellings with white, canvas tents will begin appearing by the roadside.

The focus of this drive is Pekucho Lake, or Peiku-tso, to locals. It is a high-altitude saltwater lake at about 4590 m. Stretching over 25 kilometers across the plateau, it offers views on a clear day of 8027 m high Shishapangma, the 14th highest mountain on Earth. Many travelers are often overexcited to reach the lakeside but get very dizzy just from getting there. Take it easy, walk slowly, breathe deeply, and don't stay there more than 20 mins maximum.

You will arrive in Shegar by early afternoon. You will find a basic but relatively clean guest house with squat toilets, thin blankets, and little hot water available. Bring your own sleeping bag liner. Take your rest for the night and don't do any exploration.

Max Altitude: 4,590 m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Standard HotelDuration: 7–8 hrs driveDistance: 270 km

Today you will wake up either surprisingly refreshed or in moderately bad shape; either is common after the first night spent above 4,300 meters. Just eat whatever you can tolerate for breakfast this morning.

The morning drive will take us east along the Friendship Highway across the northern Tibetan Plateau. The country is barren, brown, windswept, and utterly without scale: nothing can quite prepare you for the sheer immensity of the sky at this altitude. You will pass several small Tibetan settlements in which the flat roofs have weavers' prayer flags in the piercing plateau air.

A short climb will take you to Gyatso La Pass at 5,220 meters, the highest point along this entire road; the driver will pull over for a very short break of roughly ten minutes—any longer is guaranteed to induce a rapid headache after breathing the thinner air at such a high altitude.

As we descend to Shigatse, the topography eases up remarkably; broad river valleys, poplar lines of irrigation canals, and fields of golden barley denote the relatively more manageable elevation we are experiencing. Shigatse is Tibet's second city, with a population of around 100,000, and sits at an accommodating 3,836 meters.

Here you'll visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, where the Panchen Lama has historically been seated, established in 1447. Monks debate over scripture in courtyards within the monastery, and the heavy scent of yak butter candles permeates your senses in a way that is hard to later adequately explain.

Max Altitude: 5,220 m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Standard HotelDuration: 5–6 hrs driveDistance: 240 km

Today you start the day with driving and feel much more comfortable with the altitude than on either Day 2 or 3. The relative low altitude of Shigatse gives you a real opportunity for your body to recuperate. Make sure you eat a large breakfast this morning, as the day's sightseeing requires a good deal more physical exertion than any other day on this itinerary.

The road from Shigatse to Gyantse follows the curves of the wide Nyang River valley, flanked on either side by golden fields of barley, which Tibetan families have worked for millennia. You'll drive past small villages where traditional flat-roofed stone houses are clustered around lines of prayer wheels.

At 3,977 m, Gyantse boasts some of the most historic buildings anywhere in Tibet beyond Lhasa. You will be able to explore the active monastery of Pelkor Chode, which uniquely supports monks from three of Tibet's various Buddhist sects under one roof. Adjacent to the monastery stands the Kumbum Stupa, a ninth-story structure built in the fifteenth century housing 108 individual chapels, all richly adorned with thousands of murals.

You will have an opportunity to walk up the internal staircases to the summit levels to survey the valley from above (be careful with very young children) and cannot quite imagine just how demanding climbing to the fortress on the hilltop of the Gyantse Dzong really feels at such altitude; slow your pace accordingly and ensure that members of your group let their guide know should they feel the need to rest.

Max Altitude: 3,950 m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Standard HotelDuration: 2–3 hrs driveDistance: 90 km

You'll prepare and depart around 7:30 AM. The road will take a steep turn out of Gyantse toward Karo La Glacier, which looks like a wall of ice that seems to be dripping off a cliff over 5,010 meters above you. You'll have about 15 minutes for photo stops. Most mountain scenery that you view is very far away; this feels like it's about to fall on top of you. Kids will be totally psyched; you'll likely find yourself with an ineffable, hushed wonder.

The road continues downhill and then up again after Karo La, before opening up to a sudden, vast panorama at the viewpoint for Yamdrok Lake. Yamdrok-tso is the third of the three sacred lakes of Tibet. It is 4,441 meters above sea level, is over 72 km long, and takes on the hues of the sea, from deepest turquoise to brightest cobalt, depending on the state of the clouds and the way light plays on the surrounding mountains.

It takes several minutes to begin to get to grips with the size of the lake. A common mistake is to waste too much time at Yamdrok Lake, arriving in Lhasa well after 8:00 PM, tired and confused. So keep your stop at the lake to less than 40 minutes and move on. The last portion of the journey descends into the Lhasa Valley, following the tributary valley of the Yarlung Tsangpo River through increasingly populated land.

Your Lhasa hotel (quite likely the best accommodation of your trip) will be checked into sometime in the early evening. Tonight enjoy a real hot meal and get a full night’s rest, as you have two solid days of sightseeing ahead of you starting tomorrow.

Max Altitude: 4,441 m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Standard HotelDuration: 6–7 hrs driveDistance: 260 km

There are the two days of structured sightseeing that you get after several days of traveling in vehicles, and in these two days, you should be able to cope with the pace of sightseeing with your whole family. Actually, most people are feeling much better than in Shegar and Gyantse here in Lhasa. Lower elevation, urban conveniences, and heated accommodation in Lhasa make people feel less altitude sickness. This does not mean you can exert more energy.

Day 6 starts at Potala Palace, former home of the Dalai Lama (and 17th-century winter palace), and reaches 13 stories above Lhasa. Your guide will pre-obtain timed tickets in advance; only a certain number is permitted each day. The interior stairs are very steep and thin. Even with no stops for lunch, most families are more than 20 minutes late arriving at the top.

Here you will walk past the tombs of the previous Dalai Lamas, through chapels adorned with literally thousands of Buddhist murals (every surface is painted and then repainted when needed), and into further chapels containing gold statuary.

Your guide will then take you on to Barkhor Street, the original pilgrimage circuit around Jokhang Temple. You'll walk beside elderly pilgrims twirling their individual prayer wheels, wizened monks in rusty burgundy robes, and traders selling everything from yak butter to incense to religious icons. This street is deeply textured, ancient, and unlike any other place on your itinerary.

There are good restaurant options for food, in Tibetan, Chinese, Nepali, and Western styles. Do avoid raw salads and tap water, irrespective of where you're eating, for the entire duration.

Max Altitude: 3,650 m Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Standard HotelDuration: 6–7 hrsDistance: 35–40 km

Following our breakfast, we start with Drepung monastery, the second largest in Tibet, situated on a hillside above the city of Lhasa. We spend the morning walking among the extensive courtyards, chapels and other buildings and get acquainted with the workings of one of Tibet's more important learning centers. Back in Lhasa, we take a break for lunch.

After lunch, we head to Sera monastery, a place famous for the lively and colorful monks' debate, which usually commences at approximately 3:00 PM in the main courtyard. After watching this fascinating scene, we move to the Norbulingkha palace, the Summer Residence of the Dalai Lama, for a calm stroll through its lush grounds.

There are fine restaurants for tasty cuisine; Tibetan, Chinese, Nepali, or Western style, but for safety, we will steer clear of raw food and tap water.

Day 8 is the last day of your Tibet overland tour. Your guide will organize an early departure for the airport transfer. Gonggar Airport is at 3,600 meters, and altitude combined with travel day stress is a bad recipe even for veteran travelers.

If returning to mainland China, you will have a 2.5-hour flight to Chengdu or a 4.5-hour flight to Beijing. Groups taking the overland return to Nepal through Gyirong Pass will have a full day of travel, driving about 8 to 9 hours.

All required documentation, spare prescription drugs, and a single insulated layer should remain in your carry-on bag until you board the actual aircraft.

Essential Information

Best Time To Go Tibet Overland Group Joining Tour

Spring Season (April to May)

Spring is the best time of year for the Tibet overland group tour. The plateau of Tibet will enter the warmer period, daytime temperature may rise to around 5°C-18°C and winter temperature will be far away, while it won’t be too crowded as it is in the summer. We are expected to enjoy many sunny mornings with a steady view of Shishapangma mountain at Pekucho lake, as well as an open and boundless vista of Yamdrok lake.

The road conditions from Kathmandu to Kerong will also improve dramatically once the winter snow begins to melt at the high passes, such as the Gyatso La. The Hotels in Shigatse and Lhasa will be open and running normally, but prices will be much lower than they will be during the height of the tourist season, and will assist families in keeping the total tour price to a minimum.

The land will also begin to become alive with green agriculture landscapes. While driving along the Nyang River valley in spring, you will witness farmers tilling barley fields, and this will add to the cultural immersion of the trip. Winds will blow across the plateau, however, so pack lip balm and sunglasses!

Autumn Season (September to October)

By autumn, conditions will be at their clearest for mountain viewing, a trip that would suit families more concerned with views over the overland route. Following the monsoon, dust has cleared, and humidity will be low, offering clear, crisp views of the Himalayas, Karo La Glacier, and the entire length of Yamdrok Lake with its stunning turquoise hues. Daytime temperatures are typically between 8°C-20°C, though the nights turn cool, but should still be bearable if dressed in layers.

Road conditions remain consistent, and the risk of landslides from the monsoon rains will be significantly less than in July/August. Consistent road conditions mean fewer unexpected alterations to plans, which is often a major cause of concern for first-time visitors.

Autumn also coincides with the harvest season throughout central Tibet. You will travel through fields of golden barley as you approach Gyantse and Shigatse and will find local villages bustling with activity, but relaxed and unhurried. The only potential drawback is that demand will be high. The processing of permits and booking of hotels should be done well in advance of this period, and particularly before China's National Day, at the beginning of October.

Transportation

On a Tibet overland group joining tour, your mode of transportation will mainly be tourist vehicle accredited by a Tibetan-registered travel agency, as you cannot drive yourself if you are a foreign tourist. On the way from Kathmandu to the Tibetan border at Kerong, you will either travel in a private bus or jeep (depending on the group size). At the Chinese immigration at Gyirong Port, you will switch to a Tibet-registered bus (a Land Cruiser if there are just a few of you, or a spacious minibus for a larger group).

Roads between Kerong and Shigatse are fully paved, but those closest to the Nepal border could be bumpy and dusty. Driving times from Kerong to Shigatse are long, and delays can be caused by unexpected changes in the weather, roadblocks and speed restrictions. It's easy to forget the effects of driving at high altitude continuously for days.

Accommodation

Your lodging during a Tibet overland group joining tour will vary from basic guesthouses in tiny towns to 3-star level hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse. In Kerong and Shegar, you can expect basic Tibetan-style lodgings, which will have comfortable beds, shared or en-suite bathrooms, and limited hot water (usually only in the evening). Instead of central heating, you'll have electric blankets in rooms.

In Shigatse and Lhasa, you will stay at a 3-star equivalent level hotel, which will have a private bathroom, 24-hour hot water, wi-fi in lobby areas, and western-style toilets. Oxygen will only be available in rooms of some higher-end Lhasa hotels, and is not generally available anywhere else. While families usually want to be luxurious, don't expect this anywhere except Lhasa.

Expect that you won't have much problem with electricity, but small villages can experience occasional outages. You should always pack your own toiletries, hand sanitizer and a towel. If you want a choice of room and less noise, be sure to book a room in advance during peak travel times in September and October.

Food and Meal Options

Your meals will be a mixture of Tibetan, Chinese, some Nepali or Western depending on the place and the provider of your tour on a Tibet overland group joining. At Kerong and Shegar, your meals are simple but satisfying, including fried rice, noodle soup, steamed buns, eggs and seasonal vegetables. The choice will decrease as the altitude increases, and your meals are likely to be the same throughout. The hygiene level in restaurants suggested by your guide will be basic, but acceptable.

In Shigatse and Lhasa, you will have more choices of meals, including Tibetan yak dishes, momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), Sichuan dishes and some Western breakfast. Make sure all the food you eat will be a fully cooked hot meal, say no to any raw salads, tap water and ice cubes.

Families with children can bring something from home, like an energy bar and cookies. At a higher altitude, don't eat too much at once. It may make you feel uncomfortable. So you are encouraged to eat in small quantities and drink enough bottled or boiled water.

Permits and Regulations | Costs Details

Foreign passport holders are not allowed to travel independently in the Tibet Autonomous Region. You must book with a registered Tibetan tour agent, who will apply for all necessary permits for you. No separate application at embassies or government offices is accepted. It is advisable that you book the tour for three to four weeks in advance of travel to avoid rushed plans, as the permits typically take ten to fifteen working days, and the processing can be very delayed during peak months, April-May and Sept-Oct.

1. Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)

Issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, this is the primary entry permit to Tibet. Airlines and border customs officers would ask for this document upon entry to Lhasa or entry through Gyirong Port. The fees are normally included in your package tour.

2. Tibet Group Visa (for entry from Nepal)

If you enter Tibet overland from Nepal, you are required to have a special Group Visa granted by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal. A Group Visa can override an existing Chinese visa. Embassy visa fee would generally vary between US $35 and $50, depending on nationality.

3. Alien’s Travel Permit (ATP)

The ATP is necessary if you go to any restricted areas, such as Mt. Everest Base Camp. Your guide can get the permit at Lhasa or Shigatse, and the fee will normally be included in the package.

Required Documents

  • Passport valid for at least six months with two blank pages
  • Scanned passport copy submitted in advance
  • Physical passport submitted in Kathmandu for Group Visa processing
  • Completed visa form and passport photos if entering from Nepal

Altitude Sickness Prevention and Acclimatization Tips in Tibet

Traveling to Tibet is like traveling through some of the world’s highest places, and when you go there, the adjustment to altitude is one of the main factors of the trip. As part of the tour we have in our package, our Tibet Overland tour allows you to climb to higher altitudes at a gradual pace than if you decide to fly from an elevated land to a high altitude, and also the process for adaptation is easier for the adjustment of altitude to the body. The process of adaptation, staying with adequate hydration as you travel by land, will not make the adaptation of your body to the altitude so risky and difficult.

Tips to Prevent Altitude Sickness During Tibet Overland Tour

  • Choose a refined acclimatization route: Our overland trip steadily climbs to high altitude, thus helping to acclimatise your body for changing altitudes automatically.
  • Ensure to drink sufficient water throughout the journey: High altitude causes dehydration, therefore make sure to drink as much water as possible during the tour at high altitude.
  • Do Not Consume alcohol and smoke: These habits hinder your body's acclimatization in high altitude, specifically during the first few days.
  • Take Adequate rest and avoid doing much physical Activity: Avoid running while trekking on a high altitude trek, walk slowly during sightseeing.
  • Get Enough Food: During a high altitude overland tour, ensure your travel itinerary provides you with plenty of time to have 3 timely, nutritious meals throughout the journey, which help maintain energy with adequate carbs.
  • Get Enough Sleep: Mandatory for Tibet overland travelers traveling overland, at all elevations.
  • Know your symptoms: Watch out for dizziness and headache, exhaustion, or the feeling that you may throw up on a higher altitude hike.
  • You will need to consult your local tour guides in Tibet in case of an illness.
  • Take Your Medicine along: Consult your doctor about any medicines you need for treating altitude sickness before departure to Tibet.
  • Keep yourself warm and dry: The weather in Tibet could turn from good to worse unexpectedly, so proper clothing can keep you safe from cold and cold-related conditions.
  • Local guides: Our guides monitor the health condition and will help you to handle these situations for a safe trip.

Note: Don’t worry, the altitude concern should not bother your mind in the Tibet trip, since every group for Tibet travels accompanied by professional and responsible Tibetan tour leaders with abundant experience in and knowledge of Tibet's high altitude will follow you up during the entire trip. If they find out your symptoms of high attitude, they will treat you attentively by providing care, medicines, effective preventions and guidance, and they are capable enough to tackle it.

Tibet Sightseeing By Bus Tour Difficulty Level

Tibet Bus Tour is categorized as a relatively easy to moderately difficult tour accessible for most travelers with a basic level of fitness. This trip is not a trekking tour - most of the travel will be done by bus or private vehicle -with stops for sightseeing at monasteries, lakes, viewpoints, and local cultural sites.

The most difficult part of this tour will be the altitude, as most travelers will experience mild symptoms (tiredness, headaches, shortness of breath, etc.), among other things, within the first few days after the highest altitudes of the trip, which is usually around 4000 meters above sea level. Some acclimatization will occur, however, with the journey starting in Nepal and concluding with a gradual overland route through 5 major passes (4,500 meters or higher).

Preparing for this tour does not require much experience; traveling to complete the tour by bus, participants should anticipate long scenic drives over varying weather conditions and the occasional (5-15 mins), which will be mandatory for sightseeing, but otherwise will consist only of visiting the sights by bus or private vehicle. New travelers, traveling for the first time, or bringing children, will all be able to complete the Tibet Bus Tour by adhering to this guide.
